Altice USA faces a new copyright infringement lawsuit exceeding $1 billion from major music companies Warner Music and Sony Music, along with their publishing divisions and subsidiaries. The lawsuit focuses on alleged copyright violations by Altice subscribers between December 2020 and December 2023.

The plaintiffs identified nearly 170 pages of allegedly infringed recordings and compositions, including works from prominent artists like Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, and Fleetwood Mac. They claim to have sent over 70,000 notices of alleged file-sharing infringement to Altice between February 2020 and November 2023.

Key allegations against Altice USA include:

  • Knowingly contributing to and profiting from copyright infringement
  • Failing to implement reasonable measures to prevent unauthorized downloading
  • Not terminating services of repeat infringers
  • Attracting subscribers by allowing unrestricted copyright infringement
  • Prioritizing corporate profits over legal responsibilities

The plaintiffs seek maximum statutory damages of $150,000 per infringed work. This case joins several other music industry actions against ISPs, including:

  • A $46.8 million verdict against Grande Communications (2022)
  • A settlement with Charter Communications
  • A $1 billion verdict against Cox Communications (currently under appeal)
