Australia's Bluefest Hits 109,000 Attendance Mark While Festival Industry Struggles to Survive
Australia's Bluefest 2025 achieved a remarkable attendance of 109,000 people, marking the third-highest turnout in its history and the largest attendance for any Australian festival since the pandemic.
Despite this success, Australia's festival sector faces significant challenges. Only 56% of music festivals were profitable in 2022-2023, with 35% operating at a loss and 8% breaking even. Major events including Splendour in the Grass, Groovin The Moo, and Falls Festival have been cancelled due to financial instability.

Key challenges facing the industry include:
- Rising operational costs (cited by 47% of organizers)
- Average festival cost of $3.9 million
- 30-40% inflation in the sector since the pandemic
- Declining youth attendance (18-24 demographic dropped from 41% to 27%)
- Later ticket purchasing patterns creating uncertainty
The Australian government has responded with a $25 million extension of the Revive Live program, including:
- $7.8 million already delivered
- $8.6 million in the 2025-26 budget
- $16.4 million announced in April 2025
The impact is significant: over 1,300 live music stages have closed since the pandemic. The funding aims to stabilize the sector, create performance opportunities, and support industry recovery and growth. While Bluefest's success shows potential, it represents an exception rather than the industry norm.
