The Recording Academy has withdrawn rapper J-Kwon's Grammy eligibility as a songwriter for Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," which is nominated for 2025 Song of the Year. While J-Kwon's 2004 hit "Tipsy" is interpolated in Shaboozey's country track, the Academy's rules regarding sampled material mean he'll only be eligible for a certificate if the song wins.

Originally, Shaboozey's track credited J-Kwon (Jerrell C. Jones), Joe Kent, and Mark Williams as songwriters. However, per the Recording Academy's updated post, these writers have been removed from consideration, though they remain eligible for certificates if the song wins at the February 1 ceremony.

"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" has dominated the charts, holding the #1 position for 19 weeks - matching Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" record. The song has helped earn Shaboozey five Grammy nominations, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance, and Song of the Year. The Virginia native's success extended to collaborations with Beyoncé on her country album "Cowboy Carter," with their track "Spaghetti" receiving a Best Melodic Rap Performance nomination.

The 2025 Song of the Year category also features:

  • Billie Eilish - "Birds of a Feather"
  • Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars - "Die With A Smile"
  • Taylor Swift and Post Malone - "Fortnight"
  • Chappell Roan - "Good Luck, Babe!"
  • Kendrick Lamar - "Not Like Us"
  • Sabrina Carpenter - "Please Please Please"
  • Beyoncé - "Texas Hold 'Em"
