Kendrick Lamar Murals in Compton Face Repeated Vandalism
Multiple Kendrick Lamar murals in Compton have been vandalized, with at least two prominent artworks being repeatedly defaced. The incidents inspired lyrics in Lamar's recent track "wacced out murals" from his latest album GNX.
Kendrick Lamar vandalized mural in Compton
The first mural, painted by Mike Norice at Tam's Burgers (featured in Lamar's "Not Like Us" music video), was defaced last month. A second mural by artists Sloe Motion and Gustavo Zemeño Jr., located on Mi Sabor restaurant, has endured multiple instances of vandalism.
Lamar addressed the vandalism in his album's intro track with the lines: "Yesterday, somebody whacked out my mural / That energy'll make you n—as move to Europe." The Mi Sabor mural artists later shared security footage of the vandalism on Instagram, finding solace in their work being immortalized in Lamar's song.
The timing of these incidents coincides with the ongoing public feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, though no direct connection has been established. Drake recently filed a lawsuit against UMG regarding Lamar's diss track "Not Like Us."
Mexican mariachi singer Deyra Barrera, who performs the Spanish vocals in "wacced out murals," revealed in a Billboard interview that she will appear in an upcoming episode of Norice's YouTube series "Art & Soul" to discuss the mural and its significance.
