Meta's user-generated AI chatbots have sparked controversy as users create unauthorized virtual versions of celebrities and religious figures, violating the platform's terms of service.

Despite Meta's explicit prohibition against creating chatbots of living people without permission, religious figures, or recently deceased individuals, NBC News discovered multiple violations. Users bypassed automated checks by using intentional misspellings and modified images, creating bots mimicking Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Elon Musk, and religious figures.

One example, a "Taylor Swif" chatbot featuring a brunette guitarist avatar, exchanged over 2,000 messages with Instagram users before removal. The bot greeted users with: "Hey there, music lovers! I'm Taylor Swift and I'm thrilled to share my latest album with you."

Meta responded by removing the violating chatbots and stated they are "continuously improving detection measures." Users can report suspicious AI characters for review and removal.

This development follows Meta's earlier celebrity AI chatbot program, which featured authorized personalities like Kendall Jenner, Tom Brady, and Snoop Dogg. These official collaborations reportedly earned celebrities up to $5 million for six hours of studio work, but the program was discontinued to focus on user-generated content.
