New Study Reveals How Americans Listen to Music: Radio Still Leads, Streaming Close Behind
Americans spend 74% of their daily audio time listening to music, significantly outweighing podcast and spoken-word audio consumption, according to new Edison Research data.

Music platform usage chart in USA
Music listening in the United States breaks down across several platforms:
- AM/FM radio and radio streams: 32% (leading platform)
- Streaming services (Spotify, Apple, Amazon, etc.): 28%
- YouTube for music and videos: 18%
- SiriusXM: 9%
- Owned music (vinyl, CD, digital files): 9%
- Music channels on TV: 3%
For listeners aged 13-64, streaming slightly edges out AM/FM radio, capturing 31% of music listening time. This shift highlights the growing influence of digital platforms among younger audiences while demonstrating radio's continued significance in music consumption.
Edison Research attributes music's dominance to its vast historical library spanning hundreds of years, available across multiple platforms. The company will present its complete Top 10 Findings of 2024 in an upcoming webinar on December 10, followed by the fifth anniversary Latino Podcast Listener Report on December 17.
These findings emphasize music's enduring role as the primary form of audio entertainment in the United States, despite the rising popularity of other audio formats like podcasts and audiobooks.
