Quavo Hit with Copyright Lawsuit Over 'Bubble Gum' Track
Quavo, former member of Migos, faces a copyright infringement lawsuit over his 2018 song "Bubble Gum" from his debut solo album, Quavo Huncho. The lawsuit was filed in California by rapper L.Mont (Lamount London).
Quavo sued over bubblegum song rights
L.Mont claims he wrote and copyrighted his song "Bubblegum" in 2015, releasing it on major streaming platforms. He alleges direct contact with Quavo when he performed as an opening act for 2 Chainz and Migos in New Orleans. At an afterparty following the show, L.Mont says he gave Quavo a demo CD containing the track, hoping for future collaboration.
The lawsuit alleges Quavo used protected elements from L.Mont's song without authorization. Universal Music Group, Quality Control Music, Capitol Records, and Motown are named as co-defendants in the case.
Key points of the lawsuit:
- L.Mont registered the copyright in 2015
- Direct interaction occurred at a New Orleans afterparty
- Demo CD was provided to Quavo
- Unauthorized use of protected elements is claimed
- Seeks injunction to stop song distribution
- Demands damages and attorney fees
The case highlights ongoing issues of copyright protection in the music industry and the importance of proper documentation and authorization when using musical elements from other artists.
