Sony Music Reports 75,000+ AI Deepfake Takedowns in Response to UK's Proposed AI Law
Sony Music Entertainment has revealed taking down over 75,000 AI-generated deepfake tracks as part of their response to the UK's proposed AI regulations. The company disclosed this information during a consultation on AI copyright regulations, which includes a controversial "opt-out" framework for AI training.
From November 2023 to present, Sony Music's takedown rate averaged approximately 144 unauthorized AI-generated tracks per day, increasing from their previously reported 10,000 total takedowns. This significant increase highlights the growing challenge of managing unauthorized AI-generated content in the music industry.

Sony Music strongly opposes the UK's proposed opt-out system, which would allow AI companies to train their models on copyrighted materials without prior authorization unless rightsholders explicitly opt out. The company argues this approach would:
- Harm artists and their creative rights
- Disrupt existing AI training license negotiations
- Negatively impact intellectual property protection
- Create adverse economic consequences
Other major industry players, including Merlin and various music organizations, have also expressed concerns about the proposed regulations. The UK government has reportedly delayed the AI Bill's publication until at least summer while reviewing consultation responses from the 10-week period that ended February 25th.
The government maintains its goal of "turbocharging AI" while promoting economic growth, but faces significant pushback from creative industries concerned about protecting intellectual property rights in an increasingly AI-driven landscape.
