The original creative team returns with Rob Reiner directing and starring alongside Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer reprising their roles as the legendary fictional band members. The sequel features an impressive lineup of celebrity cameos, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.
To introduce new audiences to the franchise, a restored version of the 1984 original will return to theaters before becoming available on streaming platforms.
The film's release follows a significant $400 million lawsuit settlement in 2019 between the creators and UMG's then-parent Vivendi over soundtrack royalties. The creators had alleged receiving only $98 in royalties between 1989 and 2006. Under the new agreement, UMG maintains distribution rights for the original film's recordings, with rights eventually reverting to the creators.
Additional cast members include Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison.
"'This Is Spinal Tap' isn't just a movie—it's a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre," states Bleecker Street, emphasizing their commitment to honoring the original while creating fresh content for both new and existing fans.
