Universal Music Group Teams Up With China's Modern Sky to Bridge Global Music Markets
Universal Music Group (UMG) has partnered with Modern Sky, China's leading independent music label, in a strategic move to expand both companies' global reach.
UMG Modern Sky Music Deal
Modern Sky, founded in 1997 in Beijing, brings significant assets to the partnership:
- A roster of 150 artists including popular acts like Miserable Faith and New Pants
- Organization of 30+ annual music festivals and 1,000+ performances across China
- International offices in New York, Liverpool, and Tokyo
- Plans for further global expansion
The partnership provides:
- Modern Sky access to UMG's worldwide distribution network
- Opportunities for UMG's international artists to connect with Chinese audiences
- Enhanced collaboration between both companies in the Chinese mainland
This alliance comes as China's recorded music market grew 25.9% in 2023, according to IFPI data. For UMG, it represents their latest expansion in China, following:
- Launch of "Universal Music China Greater Bay Area" in September
- Partnership with TF Entertainment
- Distribution agreement with iQIYI's The Rap of China 2024 program
"We're thrilled to bring a fresh side of Chinese originality to the world, inviting audiences everywhere to experience the unique energy and cultural depth of China's youth," stated Modern Sky founder and CEO Shen Lihui.
The partnership aims to create a two-way cultural bridge, facilitating both Chinese artists' global expansion and international artists' access to the Chinese market.
