The series comes amid mounting legal troubles for Combs, who faces multiple lawsuits and federal charges for racketeering, sex trafficking, fraud, and transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs was recently denied bail and remains in custody after pleading not guilty.

50 Cent and Stapleton emphasized the documentary's mission in a joint statement: "This is a story with significant human impact. It is a complex narrative spanning decades, not just the headlines or clips seen so far." They stressed that while the allegations against Combs are serious, they shouldn't overshadow hip-hop culture's broader contributions.

The project began development in December 2023, following lawsuits from four women, including Combs' ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. Ventura's case was notably settled after video evidence emerged confirming her assault allegations.

Additional lawsuits have been filed by numerous individuals, including:

  • Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones
  • Grace O'Marcaigh
  • Crystal McKinney
  • Dawn Richard
  • Joi Dickerson-Neal
  • Liza Gardner
  • April Lampros
  • Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith
  • Multiple Jane Does
  • Thalia Graves

50 Cent has pledged that proceeds from the documentary will support sexual assault victims. While Combs has largely denied wrongdoing, he admitted to assaulting Ventura after video evidence emerged.
