Apple Music Asks Rights Owners to Submit ISNI Metadata for Better Artist Attribution
Apple Music is now actively encouraging rights owners to submit International Standard Name Identifier (ISNI) metadata as part of their standard workflow procedure. This initiative aims to improve content attribution and discoverability across the platform.

Key Benefits:
- Unambiguous attribution of musicians, contributors, and record labels
- Enhanced search experience for listeners
- Improved digital workflows for copyright management
- Better rights and royalties management
- Streamlined information exchange for digital discovery
ISNI serves as the global standard identifier for creative contributors, including:
- Researchers
- Inventors
- Writers
- Artists
- Visual creators
- Performers
- Producers
- Publishers
As an ISO 22729-certified standard, ISNI works alongside other international identifiers like DOI, ISAN, ISBN, ISRC, ISSN, and ISWC. It assigns a unique, persistent identifying number to names or personas, eliminating name ambiguity in online search and discovery.
Tim Devenport, ISNI International Agency's Executive Director, states: "Leveraging ISNI's capabilities as a bridging identifier — alongside Apple ID and other international standards — should further streamline the information exchanges underlying digital discovery to the benefit of creators and consumers alike."
This implementation ensures that creators' work can be accurately attributed across all platforms in the global supply chain, significantly improving content organization and accessibility.
