Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian and Digg's original founder Kevin Rose have joined forces to repurchase Digg, shortly after Ohanian's involvement in Frank McCourt's TikTok U.S. operations bid.
The duo aims to reinvent Digg as a modern social platform that addresses current social media challenges. Their vision focuses on creating a genuine community-driven space that recaptures the early internet's spirit of discovery and excitement.
The new Digg promises to tackle common social media problems like misinformation, spam, and hostile interactions. The platform will leverage AI technology for background operations while prioritizing human connections and community building.
Key aspects of the new Digg include:
- AI-powered background operations
- Focus on genuine community engagement
- Balanced approach between technology and human judgment
- Simplified content moderation
- User-friendly experience
The venture is backed by True Ventures and Seven Seven Six, with Justin Mezzell appointed as CEO. The platform will begin rolling out invites to users in the coming weeks.
"Online communities thrive when there's a balance between technology and human judgment," states Ohanian. "We're bringing Digg back to ensure that balance exists. Kevin and I are here to build something better than what social platforms are offering today."
This revival is particularly significant given Digg's historical influence on Reddit's upvote/downvote system. The platform was previously sold to Betaworks in 2012, with its assets and patents later acquired by LinkedIn.
