The enhanced special will screen in select US and UK theaters on January 27 and 28, 2024, before streaming on Paramount+ starting February 12. The remastered version features iconic acoustic performances including "Tears in Heaven" and "Layla," along with previously unreleased footage and a new interview where Clapton discusses his musical influences.
The original 1992 Unplugged album sold 26 million copies worldwide, becoming the most successful live album ever recorded. Clapton, the only triple inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist and member of both the Yardbirds and Cream), has sold over 100 million records in his career.
This special release is a collaboration between MTV, Surfdog Records, and Surfdog producer John Logsdon, with executive producers Bruce Gillmer and Vanessa Whitewolf from MTV joining Clapton, Michael Eaton, and Dave Kaplan. Alicia Portugal serves as series executive in charge, while Lisa Lauricella acts as series music talent executive.
The project follows A24's successful theatrical re-release of The Talking Heads' concert film, Stop Making Sense, though Clapton's recent controversial statements regarding the COVID-19 pandemic may affect its reception.
