Iggy Azalea to Sue Universal Music Over Millions in Unpaid Global Royalties
Iggy Azalea alleges Universal Music Group (UMG) has withheld royalties "in the 8 figure range," specifically for earnings outside the United States. The Australian rapper plans legal action after a two-year private dispute with the label.

According to Azalea, who signed with Island Def Jam in 2013, UMG attempted to settle the dispute with an $18,000 offer after a comprehensive audit. The "Fancy" artist claims the company systematically takes advantage of artists who cannot afford legal battles over unpaid royalties.
Key points about the dispute:
- Azalea claims royalties owed are in the eight-figure range
- The dispute has been ongoing for over two years
- UMG allegedly offered an $18,000 settlement
- The dispute concerns international royalties only
- Azalea plans to pursue legal action
The artist, who announced an "eight-figure" Domain Capital catalog deal in November 2022, states she has the financial means to pursue legal action against UMG. While concrete proof of the allegations hasn't been provided, Azalea shared screenshots of text messages discussing the audit.
This dispute follows similar royalty-related legal challenges against Universal Music, including Limp Bizkit's recent lawsuit, which is scheduled for a dismissal hearing on March 24th. The band's amended 120-page action against UMG includes allegations against former Geffen president Jordan Schur, though UMG claims the plaintiffs have "fundamentally" changed their story.
The four-time Grammy nominee remains firm in her commitment to pursue legal action until receiving the allegedly owed royalties, stating she has the resources to maintain a prolonged legal battle if necessary.
