The legal action came after Trump's campaign deputy director of communications, Margo Martin, posted a video featuring Trump boarding a plane with the 2003 hit playing in the background. Both Trump and Martin are named in the lawsuit.

The White Stripes explicitly state in their complaint that they "vehemently oppose the policies adopted and actions taken by Defendant Trump when he was President and those he has proposed for the second term he seeks."

This case joins a growing list of musicians taking action against unauthorized political use of their music. Other artists who have opposed Trump's use of their music include:

  • Abba
  • Celine Dion
  • Foo Fighters

The Artist Rights Alliance has organized an open letter calling for political parties to establish clear consent policies for campaign music use. Notable signatories include:

  • Aerosmith
  • Elton John
  • The Rolling Stones
  • R.E.M.
  • Pearl Jam
  • Green Day
  • Linkin Park
  • Sia
