Authorities have ruled out foul play, though the official cause of death remains under investigation pending autopsy results. The singer's body was discovered after what officials described as a "significant amount of time" had passed.
Wheesung rose to prominence in 2002, becoming one of South Korea's most influential R&B voices. His hits including "With Me," "Insomnia," and "Even Thought of Marriage" garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. He was scheduled to perform in Daegu this weekend with ballad singer KCM.
The artist's career was marked by both tremendous success and personal struggles. In 2021, he received a two-year suspended sentence for propofol abuse. He had previously made headlines in 2020 after being found unconscious twice with etomidate, another sleep-inducing drug.
Fellow artists have shared tributes, including longtime collaborator Yoon Min-soo who wrote: "Wheesung, let's sing and make music freely in that place. I won't forget your pure and clear heart." Rapper Verbal Jint posted: "Every moment we shared was an honor. You've worked so hard. Rest in peace, Wheesung."
While police continue their investigation, the autopsy results are expected to provide more clarity about the circumstances of his death. The loss has deeply affected the Korean music industry, where Wheesung's influence on R&B and K-pop remains significant.
