The fire erupted at approximately 2:30 AM during a concert by hip-hop duo DNK, with around 1,500 people in attendance. Preliminary investigations indicate that pyrotechnic effects ignited highly flammable ceiling materials, causing the fire to spread rapidly throughout the venue.
Survivor accounts describe chaotic scenes as panic erupted. Marija Taseva, 20, survived after being caught in a stampede but reports her 25-year-old sister remains missing, possibly among those transferred to Skopje for treatment.
Law enforcement has made one arrest and issued four additional warrants, including one for the club's owner. The government has declared a seven-day national mourning period and ordered immediate safety inspections of all nightclubs and large venues across the country.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has pledged a thorough investigation to determine responsibility and prevent future tragedies.
Key impacts:
- Most victims were aged 14-24
- 18 people remain in critical condition
- Hospital staff struggling to identify victims due to missing ID cards
- Ongoing search efforts for missing persons
The incident has sparked nationwide discussions about venue safety regulations and fire prevention measures. As investigations continue, the country mourns the loss of young lives in what has become North Macedonia's deadliest nightclub disaster.
