Shailene Woodley Confirms She Will Sing Live in Janis Joplin Biopic Role
Shailene Woodley has confirmed she will perform her own vocals as Janis Joplin in the upcoming musical biopic, where she serves as both star and producer.
The project, which has been in development for seven years, will feature live singing from all cast members. During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Woodley shared her initial apprehension about singing, stating, "I don't know how to sing anything."

Music producer Linda Perry played a crucial role in helping Woodley develop her singing abilities. Perry challenged the actress by arranging impromptu performances in empty warehouses with full bands, helping her find her unique voice rather than attempting to precisely mimic Joplin's distinctive style.
The biopic, announced in September, has received a $2.5 million tax credit from the California Film Commission. Production is scheduled to span 30 days with approximately $10 million in qualified expenditures.
This film joins a growing list of musical biopics in production, including projects featuring Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, and Yacht Rock. Woodley expressed her enthusiasm for portraying Joplin, noting, "She really brought the light to this planet in a singular way, and it has been so much fun to dive into her story."
