Survey Reveals 98% of New Cars Still Feature AM Radio on Their Dashboards
AM radio remains a staple feature in 98% of new car dashboards, according to Quu's 2024 In-Vehicle Visuals Report examining the top 100 best-selling American vehicles. FM radio maintains complete market penetration at 100%.

The report reveals several key findings about in-car audio technology:
- SiriusXM is available in 92% of new vehicles
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay each have 98% availability
- Two-thirds of new vehicles come with HD radio capabilities
- GM vehicles only offer standard HD radio in Cadillac models (roughly 20% of their lineup)
The prevalence of AM radio holds particular significance for emergency communications. FEMA has invested heavily in the Emergency Alert System through AM radio infrastructure, making it crucial during natural disasters and emergencies.
In response, multiple state Attorneys General—including those from South Dakota, South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia—are advocating for the AM Radio For Every Vehicle Act.
Despite strong competition from streaming services and digital platforms, AM/FM radio maintains its position as a vital component of vehicle entertainment and emergency communication systems. However, traditional radio stations must now clearly demonstrate their value to listeners who have numerous audio options available at their fingertips.
