Meta's Threads platform appears to be expanding its feature set with plans to add music to posts, potentially positioning itself as a TikTok alternative amid the latter's potential ban in the United States.

Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi discovered references to music functionality in the app's code, suggesting users will soon be able to add music to their posts, similar to features already available on Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms.

This development comes at a strategic time, as TikTok faces a potential ban in the US. The Biden administration has indicated that enforcement of the ban will be left to the incoming Trump administration, with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew scheduled to attend Trump's January 20 inauguration.

Additional platform improvements in development include:

  • Custom display name options
  • Profile cover image functionality
  • Enhanced bio features with link support

The music integration could provide a new revenue stream for music owners, particularly significant as X (formerly Twitter) has ceased licensing negotiations with major music publishers. This comes after X's recent legal victory in March 2024, where a substantial portion of a $250 million lawsuit filed by 17 music publishers, including Sony Music and Universal Music, was dismissed.

These updates suggest Meta is actively positioning Threads as a comprehensive social media platform, combining elements from various successful platforms while creating new opportunities for content creators and music rights holders.
