While Judge James Selna initially considered reducing the damages to $17.8 million in January by removing the $53.6 million in punitive damages, he ultimately reversed his decision and awarded the full amount. The judge had previously questioned whether there was sufficient evidence to prove MGA Entertainment acted in bad faith.
The lawsuit centered on accusations that MGA Entertainment copied the likeness of the OMG Girlz girl group in seven of their LOL Surprise! OMG dolls. The court ruled in favor of T.I. and Tiny, finding MGA liable for intellectual property infringement.
Tiny expressed gratitude on Instagram, stating "Don't play with God's children! So thankful and grateful to our amazing law team." She specifically acknowledged former OMG Girlz members Bahja Rodriguez and Breaunna Womack, along with her daughter Zonnique.
T.I. defended their decision to pursue legal action, saying "[They were] trying to paint me as the bad guy when really, they were the [bad] ones. They were the ones that came and ripped us off, and [they] expected us not to have the audacity to stand up and speak for ourselves."
The ruling represents a significant victory for artists protecting their intellectual property rights in the entertainment industry.
