Ticketmaster is facing criticism after canceling legitimate fan tickets while targeting bot purchases for upcoming Oasis tour dates. The controversy began when Live Nation invalidated approximately 50,000 tickets in October 2024, initially targeting those resold through unauthorized platforms.

The ticketing giant has now expanded its crackdown to include tickets purchased using automated software, regardless of whether they were resold. Affected customers began receiving refund notifications via email last Friday, with Ticketmaster stating that "any tickets identified to have been purchased by bots will be refunded" as they violate tour terms and conditions.

While Ticketmaster claims their "Expert Abuse and Fraud teams" reviewed all sales to identify bot purchases, they've declined to share specific detection methods to prevent touts from gaming the system. The company has stated that findings from their investigation will be shared with law enforcement where appropriate.

However, numerous fans report having their legitimate tickets canceled despite following all purchase rules. Affected customers who believe their refunds were made in error can submit an appeal form for review by tour promoters.

Ticketmaster has confirmed that canceled tickets will be resold at face value, though some fans speculate the cancellations may be aimed at driving higher-priced sales. This controversy follows other recent Oasis tour issues, including:

  • Extremely high ticket prices
  • A CMA investigation into Ticketmaster
  • A proposed U.K. government cap on ticket resale prices

The situation highlights ongoing challenges with ticket scalping prevention while maintaining fair access for legitimate fans.
