TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin have become the first non-gaming apps to exceed $6 billion in annual in-app purchases, according to recent Sensor Tower data. The platform achieved a record-breaking $1.9 billion in gross IAP revenue during Q4 2024 alone.

This remarkable achievement places TikTok ahead of all other apps and games in 2024, with its closest competitor, Monopoly Go, generating only $2.6 billion. The platform's revenue showed an impressive growth of $4.4 billion compared to 2023.

Despite leading in revenue, TikTok ranked second in Q4 2024 downloads behind Instagram, largely due to concerns over potential TikTok bans. WhatsApp, Facebook, and Temu completed the top five most downloaded apps.

Key factors contributing to TikTok's success:

  • Combined revenue from both TikTok and Douyin platforms
  • Strong focus on e-commerce, especially in Douyin's Chinese market
  • Virtual gift system where users can support creators (TikTok takes 50% commission)
  • Successful integration of in-stream shopping features

The platform's growth trajectory remains strong, having already achieved $10 billion in total consumer spending by 2023. With ban concerns subsiding and continued e-commerce expansion, TikTok's revenue is expected to see further growth in 2025.
