Travis Scott, SZA, and Future Hit With Copyright Lawsuit Over 'Telekinesis' Track by Roc Nation Artist
A Roc Nation-signed singer-songwriter has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Travis Scott, SZA, and Future over their hit song "Telekinesis." Victory Boyd claims the artists used elements of her 2019 demo "Like the Way It Sounds" without permission.
According to the lawsuit filed in New York federal court, Boyd wrote and recorded "Like the Way It Sounds" as a voice note in November 2019, sharing it with Kanye West shortly after. West allegedly played the song for Travis Scott at a Wyoming studio.
In May 2023, Scott reportedly introduced the track to SZA and Future. The three artists then released "Telekinesis" in July 2023, allegedly incorporating lyrics and other elements from Boyd's original work without authorization.
Key details from the lawsuit:
- Boyd is credited as a co-writer in streaming metadata for "Telekinesis"
- Audemars Piguet attempted to license the song for an ad campaign in November 2023
- The defendants reportedly offered Boyd an 8% writing credit, which she declined
- Boyd's song is registered under copyright number SR0000986420
