Twitter/X has requested a three-week extension to respond to the copyright lawsuit filed by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA). The new deadline, if approved, would be April 9th.
The request comes after a federal court's March 5th decision to partially dismiss the NMPA's claims while allowing others to proceed. Twitter/X cites the changed scope of the case as the reason for needing additional time to prepare its response.
Key aspects of the ongoing lawsuit include:
- Contributory infringement allegations regarding "forgiving treatment" of verified users
- Claims about Twitter's response time to takedown notices
- Questions about the platform's handling of repeat infringers
The NMPA has previously pursued similar legal actions against other platforms, including:
- A settled case against Roblox in September 2021
- An ongoing lawsuit against Vinkle's parent company filed in June 2022
The case's next milestone is a rescheduled initial case management conference set for June 7th, moved from its original March 1st date.
In related news, Bad Bunny recently filed a complaint against a Spanish fan for posting unauthorized concert footage from his Most Wanted Tour on YouTube, resulting in the removal of the content and account deactivation.
The legal proceedings continue to develop as both parties prepare for the next phases of the copyright infringement case.
