In a recent interview with Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter, Icelandic artist Björk sharply criticized Spotify's impact on the music industry, calling it "probably the worst thing that has happened to musicians." The comments came during promotion for her concert film Cornucopia, which recently premiered on Apple TV+.

Björk emphasized the importance of artistic privacy and development, stating that artists need "a few years of no one knowing what you are doing, not even yourself" to create meaningful work. She expressed gratitude for her established position, acknowledging that younger musicians often face pressure to tour extensively for income.

The artist's criticism of Spotify stems from concerns about respect for artistic craft and fair compensation. She previously boycotted releasing her album Vulnicura on the platform in 2015, explaining that giving away years of work for free seemed "insane."

This criticism joins a growing chorus of concerns about Spotify's impact on the music industry, including:

  • Recent controversies over reduced creator royalties
  • Songwriter boycotts of Spotify's Grammy-related events
  • CEO Daniel Ek's disputed comments about content creation costs

Despite her streaming platform concerns, Björk remains committed to live performance while focusing on new creative projects. She estimates she might create five more albums in her lifetime, though she wishes she had time for twenty.
