Jose Maldonado claims investigators posing as federal agents, working for Roc Nation, contacted him and offered money to file a lawsuit against the Buzbee Law Firm after confirming he was a former client. The Buzbee Law Firm is currently representing clients in high-profile cases against Jay-Z and Diddy, including a 'Jane Doe' rape case against Jay-Z.
According to Maldonado, the investigators disclosed they were being paid by Roc Nation and were directing cases to attorney Marcy Croft, who has long-standing ties with Quinn Emanuel. Roc Nation is a Quinn Emanuel client.
Tony Buzbee released a statement calling the alleged conduct "illegal and unethical," noting that investigators have approached former clients nationwide with monetary incentives to sue the firm. Buzbee anticipates more lawsuits as additional former clients report similar experiences.
The December lawsuit against Quinn Emanuel and a Mississippi attorney included transcripts of alleged conversations showing individuals impersonating federal investigators attempting to solicit legal malpractice suits against Buzbee's firm.
Currently, Tony Buzbee represents over 150 alleged victims of Sean "Diddy" Combs, who faces federal charges including racketeering and sex trafficking. Jay-Z, Roc Nation's founder, has been involved in related abuse allegation lawsuits connected to Combs.
