Spotify Launches Independent Audiobook Publishing Platform for Audio-First Short Works
Spotify has launched a new global publishing program for independent authors to create and distribute short-form audiobooks directly on their platform.
The program focuses on works specifically written for audio consumption, ranging between 10,000 and 20,000 words, across three main genres: romance, mystery/thriller, and sci-fi/fantasy. Notably, the platform excludes erotica and children's content from consideration.

Key features of the program include:
- Spotify handles all distribution aspects
- Authors receive advance payments and royalties
- Works must be "audio-first" in their approach
- Global availability for independent authors
- Integration with existing Findaway Voices self-publishing
This expansion follows Spotify's recent introduction of AI-narrated audiobooks and represents their continued investment in non-music entertainment content. The move has already yielded significant results, with most U.S. subscriptions now classified as bundles.
However, the platform faces several challenges:
- Ongoing litigation related to bundling practices
- Negotiations with major rightsholders
- Upcoming Phonorecords V discussions
- Implementation of new features amid existing offerings

The program marks a significant step in Spotify's strategy to diversify its content offerings while maintaining competitive positioning against rivals like Amazon Music in the growing audiobook market.
