TikTok Dominates US Social Media with 107 Daily Minutes Despite Ban Threat
TikTok users in the US are spending an average of 107 minutes daily on the app as of January, significantly outperforming other social media platforms despite recent federal ban concerns.

According to recent data from Guggenheim Partners and Apptopia, TikTok's engagement metrics surpass both YouTube (87 minutes) and Facebook (63 minutes) in daily user time. The platform's success is particularly driven by "superusers," with 47% of daily users spending over an hour on the app.
These strong performance metrics come amid significant regulatory challenges. The Biden administration has mandated ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to sell its US operations by January 19, 2025, or face a ban. This legislation stems from concerns about potential data privacy risks and Chinese government influence.
Recent developments show former President Trump, now back in office, has granted TikTok a 75-day extension on its potential app store ban. This extension aims to facilitate finding a US buyer, though both ByteDance and Chinese authorities currently oppose any sale.
Despite these challenges, TikTok maintains strong user engagement among American teens, though still trailing YouTube. Pew Research data from December shows:
- YouTube: 73% daily teen usage
- TikTok: 57% daily teen usage
- Instagram: 50% daily teen usage

These statistics demonstrate TikTok's resilience in the US market, maintaining strong user engagement despite regulatory uncertainties and competition from established platforms.
